Backpack vs Suitcase
When my trip began last year, I purchased the Osprey Fairview 70 s/m and it was the perfect bag for a summer in Europe. Very reasonable price wise, and comes with a snazzy set with the larger bag and a detachable smaller backpack. This combo was ideal for jet-setting, and the smaller backpack was just the right size for day trips and hiking too. Backpacking is definitely a skill that needs to be practiced though, and so far I’ve struggled. The simplicity of three outfits on repeat, trying to squeeze everything back in your bag every day or two when you move hostels, the strength needed to actually lug it around for hours on end, it can be quite a task.
In Europe though, the cobble streets will be your worst enemy if you have a suitcase. Especially in cities like Dubrovnik who have just banned tourists from dragging loud suitcases around due to complaints from locals! Sure, you won’t look as chic with the backpacks, but it sure is convenient.
I’ve spoken with some fellow backpackers while I’ve been travelling, and these seem to be the top brands to consider. Osprey, The North Face, Arc’Teryx.
Keep in mind though, my Osprey bag (which I only bought in March 2023) ripped open after only a month or two, and I had an extremely difficult time trying to find an Osprey contact to help me get a replacement over here (as the bag comes with warranty).
