The Calm & Chaos of Spontaneous Travel

My years of juggling full-time work and uni studies made me a stickler for routine and structure in my life, so you can imagine my discomfort with hopping on a plane to the other side of the world with no plans beyond my first few nights of accomodation on a friends couch. But there’s something to be said for this kind of travel. It can open doors to experiences you could never even dream of, and create the kind of friendships that last a lifetime. I have definitely become an advocate for the calm and chaos of spontaneous travel, despite the many hiccups along the way…

Every good story starts with a bit of chaos though, so lets take a look at some of the less enticing parts of unplanned travel, and then sprinkle it in the fairy dust of the joyful parts at the end!

  • Finding out accomodation is all booked up in the city you rock up at

  • Transport costs being higher when you book super last minute

  • Decision fatigue

  • Not having plans once you’re in a new location

  • Tickets to main attractions sold out months in advance

Fear not, it’s not all a disaster! I genuinely do believe the good outweighs the bad, so here it is:

  • Freedom to travel to new and unknown places with fresh friends you meet on the way

  • Experiencing things outside of your comfort zone/basically breaking the comfort zone all together

  • Seeing so many different ways of life

  • The power and gratification of the unexpected

  • Shifting your mindset and values

  • Becoming the queen of decision making

No matter. What your preference, I recommend you all give it a go, even just for a few days! The experiences, the people, and the personal growth are honestly worth every hiccup along the way.
