Medical Support Overseas

This is a very short but sweet article on the A111 Certificate for Aussies travelling in the Netherlands! I am not a professional and this is purely based on my recent experience but I hope you find it handy.

One of the bigger, and more expensive stressors when travelling is medical support. Of course, travel insurance is needed - but that still requires a lot of upfront costs if you end up injured… and a lot of hurdles to jump over if you actually end up needing to claim things. Recently, I landed myself in a bit of a pickle with a concussion and a rib injury in Amsterdam and was pretty overwhelmed trying to figure out how to get the right medical support.

That’s when I found out about the A111 Certificate, a reciprocal Medicare agreement between Australia and the Netherlands for Aussies visiting. The program allows you to get basic medical support such as a GP visit covered the same way as you would back home.

It’s pretty simple! Just go to this link; https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/application-form-for-an-a111certificate-of-eligibility-netherlands.pdf, print out the form and send it to

Zilveren Kruis
Groep Buitenlands Recht
Postbus 650
7300 AR APELDOORN
The Netherlands

Some clinics will take the form and cover the charges upfront, whilst others you will need to file a claim afterwards. Just keep your original certificate on file, as well as your ID and you should be dandy!
